Tech@MET 2015: A grand IT fest
Tech@MET - the technical fest of the MET Institute of Computer Science, was held on the February 6-7, 2015. The theme accompanying this year’s festival was “Defence in IT”.
Jay Weatherill once said that “Defence is our best attack”. Any nation’s defence sector is well known for its weaponry - aircrafts, satellites, missiles and many other systems. Today defence is shifting its focus from metal and mechanics to unmanned vehicles, drones and smart bombs, where IT is becoming increasingly pivotal. Advanced software systems and embedded technologies have become the brains behind modern warfare, allowing defence personnel to literally converse with computers to engage the enemy.
Tech@MET 2015 included numerous events which showcased the depth of IT in our modern day defence sector. To name a few, Code Storm, InstaWeb, TechnoCrat, AdMad, Quick Recall, Click-o-Maniac, Colour Crazy, Bol Vachan Technicians, Crack It to Grab it, Snakes and Ladders, Console Gaming, Lan Gaming, Xbox and Box Cricket.
Mr. Arvind Benegal, Vice President, Technology Practices, Persistent Systems Ltd., was the Chief Guest and Dr. Sunil Kumar Kopparapu, Senior Scientist, Tata Consultancy Services - Innovations Labs was the Key Note Speaker for the Inauguration Ceremony. Along with them, Mr. Pankaj Bhujbal, Trustee, Dr. (Mrs.) Sunita Mahajan, Principal of MET-ICS and Mr. Omprakash Mandge, Faculty in-charge paid tribute to Goddess Saraswati and inaugurated the festival with the lighting of the lamp.
Dr. Arvind Benegal delivered his speech on “Enterprise Digital Transformation” covering changing processes of cloud services, data as service, big data analytics, digital transformations and more. He also shared his thoughts on a case study of the popular TV show “Satyameva Jayate”. Dr. Sunil Kumar Kopparapu talked about “Usable Technology for Differently Abled”. He pointed out the techniques for communicating with such people. He also discussed on human aspects of software engineering. His main focus was on how to provide audio visual access for hearing and vision impaired.
After such a scintillating start, the function proceeded smoothly. The individual events were conducted, first day mainly the elimination rounds were held. On the second day, the final rounds of all the events were scheduled. In the valedictory function the dignitaries who shared their thoughts were Dr. Vijay Page, Director General, MET IOM and Mr. Dhananjay Mahajan, Director, Project Management, Avanade, USA. Mr. Dhananjay Mahajan, who is an expert in cloud computing, discussed about its use in the current scenario and IT state beyond cloud computing.
The festival concluded with a grand prize distribution ceremony. The winners were from VJTI, KC, Mumbai University, and other MCA and M SC (IT) colleges. The Cricket trophy was won by Somaiya.
