MET provides Musical Meditation to students

If you think that learning Indian classical music needs only serious training, then think again. MET League of Colleges has launched an unique music library for its students and staff.

Aptly titled 'MET World of Music (MET-MWM) this library was inaugurated by famous film singer Suresh Wadkar on September 29, 2006. The library allows students to experience musical bliss in a hi-tech environ-ment. The MET MWM is equipped with touch-screen kiosks, headphones and a colossal archive of music.

All you have to do is press the name of the song on the screen and you will get the details of the song, singer and its style of the beat and more. You can queue the songs in your playlists and view the videos too.

Suresh Wadkar said, "MET is an extremely committed institute with a dedicated team of music lovers. I applaud this path-breaking initiative and contribution to the music world. All the information about the ragas of the song is given in the database. It is a great collective work by the MET team."

And it's not just Indian music that is available at the MET MWM. The music varies from Western Classical, Rock, Heavy Metal, Classics, Retro-pop, World music, Jazz and even Techno.

"Studies have proven that music plays a very important role in the development of the human brain, it also acts as a stress buster and eases tensions. MET tries to provide musical meditation to students through MET World of Music" said Sunil G Karve, Founder Trustee and Vice Chairman, MET League of Colleges.

The music centre is also equipped with various Indian Classical instruments like the Tabla, Sitar, Veena and Flute for students who are keen to learn classical music practically on the Instrument.

Omkar Dadarkar, in-charge of MET WMM and a classical vocalist by profession, says that he has been working on the project since one year. "All kinds of music is available here. The names of the songs, their taal, their ragas and their origin have been uploaded for the students to understand music from the roots. There are many music centres in India, wherein youngsters go and listen to songs. But the names of ragas and the origins of the song are not available. Here, we have set up the songs in such a fashion that students get the entire details of the song at one touch of the button. Since the last one year, I have been segregating the songs and was researching on their ragas. Now, we have complied such a wonderful list of songs that no music centre in India can touch us,"said Omkar.

Prasad Kulkarni, leader of the IT team said, "Today's youngsters are not aware of the actual roots of Indian classical music. They go for training under various gurus, but they sometimes lose out on the important information like raga and the proper style of singing. There are hundreds of MP3s available in the market for music students, but they are not helpful. For at least one year, we invited parents and a student to donate their collection of classical CDs and cassettes to us so that we could use them for our library. Then we uploaded the entire data into the server using advanced technology. Finally, I am happy that we succeeded in launching the music centre."
