Words are not Enough

It was one of those days when MET Institute of Mass Media students walked into the campus with track pants and t-shirts. The workshop on Mime expected them to be active participants. Mime as a theatrical medium or as a performance art, involves the acting out of a story through body motions and facial expressions, without use of speech. Mime has a lot to do with effective communication and this was what a youthful trio Kunal Motling, Gururaj Wadke and Krunal Patil, national gold medalists at the Youth Festival for Mime, showed the PG students of Mass Media through the day-long workshop.

The trio explained the importance of proxemics - the study of how people use and perceive the physical space around them, the four main categories: intimate, social, personal, and public space. This was followed by an explanation on posture, gesture, stance and movement. There was not a moment of boredom as the student participants went through the grind. The best was saved for the last as they were taught how to apply the special make up, almost all the students donned mime make-up and enacted out lines without words and the guessing game had everyone laughing! Sometimes words are not enough!
